About 20 years ago, Past Master Ian Scarr-Hall introduced the Company to the fascinating world of Facilities Management, a growing and important part of the broader built environment industry. This sector is rapidly growing as outsourcing becomes more established as a way of managing modern businesses
Facilities Management
Facilities management is a profession that encompasses multiple disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people, place, process and technology. The facilities and built environment industry is an important part of the UK economy worth more than £100bn employing over 3 million people.
Facilities Management, therefore, has developed substantially from looking after support services in offices to the whole range of “non-core” management and built environment functions such as property strategy, space management and communications infrastructure to building maintenance, administration and contract management.
The Livery now has 50 members who come from this background and they play an important role in the activities and governance of it. There is a Facilities Management Dinner every year, often with Speakers talking about important building projects.
The Company operates two Young Manager’s Award schemes which provide career development support to deserving young managers, including one each year from the facilities management and built environment sector. The successful candidate will be selected by a judging panel of senior members from the FM industry.
